Research Topic

In addition to polycaprolactone and polylactide, lactonic sophorolipid could be a suitable starting material for biodegradable polymers from renewable resources. Known for its antibacterial, antifungal and surfactant properties sophorolipid has already been used as a monomer for ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Further modifications of the fatty acid backbone are possible with TAD-en click-type reactions, while the biologically active sophorose moiety is not affected.
The research focus is the improvement of the syntheses, the preparation of polymer films and the coating on various surfaces in the hope of outperforming the standard plastics in their thermal and mechanical properties.
